The long-awaited display is back in stock!

The 7-inch display produced by the official Raspberry Pi manufacturer is now back in stock. The Raspberry Pi display uses the DSI connector on the Raspberry Pi, so it does not occupy the HDMI port or GPIO pins.

The Raspberry Pi touchscreen display is automatically recognized and works when properly connected to the Raspberry Pi on Windows 10 IoT Core and Raspbian operating systems. If you encounter any issues, you can benefit from this article.

Official Raspberry Pi Touchscreen Display Features:

  • RGB 800×480 resolution with 60 fps support

  • 24-bit color depth

  • Up to 10-point capacitive touch support thanks to the FT5406 touch controller

  • 70° viewing angle

  • Metal back plate with mounting holes for Raspberry Pi installation

The driver board that comes with the Raspberry Pi display is connected to the Raspberry Pi via a ribbon cable through the DSI connector. There are several methods available for powering the display:

  • Using a separate micro USB power supply: With this method, you will need an additional power supply besides the one powering your Raspberry Pi.

  • Powering the display via the Raspberry Pi: By connecting a separate micro USB cable to the USB Type-A connector on the driver board and the other end to the Raspberry Pi’s micro USB power input. In this case, you will need to connect a high-current micro USB adapter to the micro USB socket on the driver board.

  • Using GPIO pins: By connecting the 5V and GND pins on the Raspberry Pi to the 5V and GND pins on the driver board using jumper wires. Since a single power supply will power both the display, driver board, and Raspberry Pi, a high-current power supply will be required.

To use the Raspberry Pi touchscreen display, you need the latest version of the Raspbian distribution. You can update it with the following commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo reboot

After this update, your Raspberry Pi will automatically detect the display and use it instead of HDMI. If you want to continue using HDMI as the default display, you need to add the line display_default_lcd=0 to the /boot/config.txt file. Multiple display usage is also supported. For example, to play a video on the default display (if settings are unchanged, this will be the touchscreen display), use the command omxplayer video.mkv. To play a video on a second display connected via HDMI, use the command omxplayer --display=5 video.mkv.

If you haven’t checked out Waveshare touchscreen displays, we also recommend taking a look at them. If you want to use this display with the Raspberry Pi 5, it will be sufficient to use it together with the Raspberry Pi Display Cable Standard - Mini - 200mm.
