Electroluminescent wire (often abbreviated as EL wire) is a thin copper wire coated in a phosphor which glows when an alternating current is applied to it. EL materials are not only available in wire form, there also exists EL panels and EL tape. These materials can be used in a wide variety of applications—vehicle and/or structure decoration, safety and emergency lighting, toys, clothing etc.
All EL materials work with AC, so they need an inverter circuit to work. There are portable inverters which can be used in wearable applications and also there exist DC powered inverters which either can be powered by a battery packs or DC wall adapters.
